On 1 September, 2007 Agder University College became the University of Agder. This is the result of decades of political and academic effort and the systematic development of the academic environment in the region.

The University of Agder was established on 1 September, 2007 when Agder University College received university accreditation. Agder University College had its roots in Agder College, established in 1994 when six regional colleges merged as a result of the national university college reform.

The University of Agder is the fifth largest higher education institution in Norway. The university was established on September 1, 2007 when Agder University College officially became the University of Agder. Agder refers to the region, consisting of the two counties of Vest-Agder and Aust-Agder.

The University of Agder was established on 1 September, 2007 when Agder University College received university accreditation. Agder University College had its roots in Agder College, established in 1994 when six regional colleges merged as a result of the national university college reform.

The merger established an institution with 5,700 students and 540 faculty and staff. The University of Agder had in 2007 approximately 8,000 students, 900 employees and an annual budget of about 800 million crowns.

The college was organized into eight, later seven faculties with the teacher training programmes (pre-school teacher education, general teacher education and practical-pedagogical education) organized interdisciplinarily.

In September 2006, the Board voted to merge the Faculties of Humanities and Education, as well as the Faculties of Engineering and Science and Mathematics and Science, resulting in the following five faculties from August 2007:

Faculty of Health and Sport

Faculty of Humanities and Education

Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences

The teacher education programmes will still be organized interdisciplinarily, under the Department of Teacher Education.

At the same time, the Board decided that the university’s activities in Aust Agder would be consolidated in Grimstad. This is expected to occur in 2009, when the new buildings around Televeien (the Technology Park) are completed.

Adam Mickiewicz University is one of the largest academic centers in Poland. The University currently employs nearly 3,000 teaching staff, including 301 full professors, 373 AMU professors and 897 senior lecturers. A smooth daily functioning of the University rests in the hands of about 2,000 administrative and technical staff members.

The University serves 52,000 students with 14 faculties offering BA, MA and PhD programmes. Students can choose from 190 majors. Among most popular degree courses are psychology, biotechnology, tourism, and political science. The newest programmes include film studies, sound editing, ethnolinguistics, social communication, protection of cultural heritage, and hydrobiology.

Adam Mickiewicz University cooperates with over 100 partner universities abroad.

The first institution of higher learning in Pozna?, was founded in 1519 by Bishop Jan Lubra?ski. Another institution of higher learning in Pozna? was the Jesuit College, founded in 1573. Its founder and first rector was the reverend Jakub Wujek, author of a well-known Polish translation of the Bible. On October 28th, 1611, King Sigismund III Vasa granted the Jesuit College the status of a university.

Unfortunately, the King’s decree evoked a sharp protest on the part of the Jagiellonian University in Cracow as a result of which Pope Paul V issued a bulla in which the Cracow Academy’s privileges had been reconfirmed. The Jesuit College managed to maintain a high level of academic instruction, it conferred academic degrees and continued extensive publishing activities. In 1772, Russia, Prussia and Austria accomplished the First Partition of Poland. The College was closed in 1773, following the annulment of the Jesuit Order.

Throughout the 123 years of the Prussian Partition, the idea of creating an institution of higher education in the Wielkopolska region had never vanished. Shortly after Poland had regained independence, on May 7th, 1919, the University of Pozna?, initially named the Piast University, officially inaugurated its activities. Dr. Heliodor ?wi?cicki, whose portrait opens a gallery of 27 portraits of former Rectors of the Pozna? University hanging on the walls of the Rector’s Office, was elected the first Rector of the newly-established University. In 1920, the University changed its name to that of the University of Pozna?. In the period before the Second World War, the University was organized into five faculties and offered academic education in the following disciplines: law, economy, medicine, humanities, mathematics, natural sciences, agriculture and forestry.

During World War II, the Pozna? University was closed, however the teachers and researchers did not stop working and organised the Underground University of Western Lands in Warsaw. Owing to their devotion and heroism about 2,000 students graduated from the Underground University. As the war drew to a close in February 1945, and while Pozna? was still the scene of heavy fighting, the University was re-opened. In December 1955, it was named after great Polish poet Adam Mickiewicz.

The year 1989, the end of communism and the rapid growth of Poland’s economy offered a great chance to Polish HEI. The number of AMU students grew from 13,000 in 1989 to 51,000 in the year 2005.

The Academy of Media Art Cologne (KHM) was founded in 1990, and offers a special and unique concept of study: instead of separating the fields of film, television, art, design and theory, they are integrated into a single course of study leading to a diploma in Audiovisual Media.

This study concept demands and facilitates an interdisciplinary engagement with the most varied artistic fields and spaces, from photography, video, feature films, documentaries, artistic television formats and animation to art in public spaces, architecture, sound, scenography, computer science in games, programming, and code, the theory and history of technology, art, the media, and aesthetics.

The results are unconventional, experimental works that go beyond predetermined definitions and genres and beyond ready-made techniques. Low and high tech are just as important components as are the symbiosis of science, development and games, documentary or staged, conventional or manipulated elements. Cooperation with institutions of higher education at home and abroad, cultural institutes, organisers of exhibitions and the media and film industries promote this process of integration.

Experimental creative praxis in conjunction with the acquisition of media-technical competence has high priority. Students’ work is project oriented and is accomplished in ateliers, studios, and laboratories. These multi-facetted activities are accompanied by lectures and seminars that cover the history and theory of media and art, as well as the historical and theoretical basics of audiovisual media. Since 2004 postgraduate study (Ph.D.) at the KHM is possible.

The academic staff of the KHM are an international team of professors and assistants, who are part of a global network of fellows, guest lecturers, and collaborators.

Once a year, towards the end of the summer semester, the KHM opens its doors for an Open Day. Everyone who is interested can view the artworks produced during the academic year, and potential students have the opportunity to visit.

Organisation

The senior management team of the KHM comprises the rector, Professor Marie-Luise Angerer, two pro-rectors, Professor Marcel Odenbach (study and teaching) and Professor Thomas Bauermeister (infrastructure und planning), and the director of administration and finance, Heiner Simons.

The rectorate takes decisions in all matters that the University Law does not assign to other university bodies. The rector represents the Academy internally and externally. She is chief officer of the rectorate and determines the principles according to which the Academy is run. The rector is head supervisor of the artistic and research staff and is responsible for the artistic concerns of the Academy, the development and realisation of goals and perspectives of future work, the Academy’s profile presented in the public sphere, and contacts with sponsors and partners.

As a member of the rectorate, the director of administration and finance is responsible for administrative affairs and supervising the non-academic staff of the institution. He is responsible for the Academy’s budget and represents the rector in legal matters.

ASB’s history

On September 15 2004, Aarhus School of Business (ASB) celebrated its 65th anniversary.

However, ASB’s predecessor, The Jutland Business School (Den Jyske Handelshøjskole, DJH), has a somewhat more extensive history. Already in the late 1800’s DJH provided business programmes to young people from Jutland who wished to take an education within business, economics and trade. Only when ASB was founded in 1939 did we become the academic institution that we are known as today.

Since the founding of ASB more than 65 years ago, we have grown and kept growing. In 1968 ASB moved from the original location down town Århus to the yellow buildings which since then have provided the setting for the outstanding research and teaching ASB stands for.

Today we are an EQUIS accredited business school, we have more than 7,000 students (a significant number of which are international students) and about 450 employees.

At Aalborg University (AAU), we dare to be different!

A characteristic feature of AAU is the courage to follow new paths within research as well as education. As a result, AAU is one of Denmark’s leading universities in terms of uncovering innovative ways of cooperating with the surrounding world at a local as well as national and international level.

From the very beginning, AAU has adopted an inter-disciplinary, problem-oriented approach to research and education and is today one of the world’s leading universities within this method.

AAU offers approx 60 different study programmes and has close to 14,000 students.

History

Although Aalborg University was inaugurated in 1974, its history goes back to 1959 when the first thoughts about establishing a centre for higher education in Northern Jutland were aired by the principal of Aalborghus Statsgymnasium (a state upper secondary/high school in Aalborg), Carl Willum Hansen. He saw it as a problem that young people from Northern Jutland wanting to continue their education beyond high school had to leave the region for universities and other institutions of higher education in other parts of Denmark because of a lack of these kinds of educational institutions in Northern Jutland. Especially because most of the young people who left the region did not return to Northern Jutland after having finished their education somewhere else. In that way Northern Jutland became drained of an important part of its youth.

As a first step towards furthering higher education in Northern Jutland, a regional trade council (Nordjyllands Erhvervsråd) established a Committee for an Engineering Academy in 1961. The primary assignment of the committee was to establish a department of Denmark’s Engineering Academy (DIA) in Aalborg, and in 1966 it became a reality. Already in 1964, however, the committee stated a new and broader goal, namely the establishment of a university.

Throughout the latter part of the 1960s an increasing debate took place about the expansion and location of institutions of higher education in Denmark. Many associations, institutions and organisations in Northern Jutland worked energetically for the establishment of a university, and the idea received strong cross-party popular support. Advocates of a university in Northern Jutland represented executives from the local business community as well as from the social, cultural and political areas of society.

In 1974 a number of already existing educational institutions either entirely or partly became integrated into what was to be called Aalborg University Centre (AUC). The institutions that became integrated were: The Business Economics’ Department of the Business School of Aalborg (Handelshøjskolens afdeling i Aalborg); Denmark’s Engineering Academy’s Aalborg Department (Danmarks Ingeniørakademis Aalborgafdeling); The Engineering College of Aalborg (Aalborg Teknikum); and The School of Social Work of Aalborg (Den Sociale Højskole i Aalborg). In addition the Surveyor Educational Programme was transferred from The Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University, Copenhagen (Landbohøjskolen i København), and many other new educational programmes were initiated at AUC as well.

In 1994, Aalborg University Centre changed its name to Aalborg University (AAU), and in 1995 the cooperation between Aalborg University and the School of Engineering in the town of Esbjerg led to a merger of the two, resulting in what is today Aalborg University Esbjerg, encompassing the fields of Natural Sciences and Engineering. In 1996 the School of Architecture and Design was established under Aalborg University in Aalborg, and in 2003 Aalborg University inaugurated a branch in Copenhagen within media technology called Copenhagen Institute of Technology. This branch is physically located at Copenhagen University College of Engineering. As of September 2007, this branch also includes a Surveyor programme.

As the latest development so far, Aalborg University and the Danish Building Research Institute in Copenhagen merged in 2007 in order to combine their knowledge within building technology. Aalborg University will continue to develop its physical as well as academic scope in such a way that the University continues to be a modern and dynamic institution at the national as well as international level.

Facts and Figures

Students

RWTH Aachen University is characterised by its strength in science and engineering education. It also provides a wide range of subjects in Economics, Arts and Humanities and Medicine with an emphasis on intensive interaction between all disciplines. The focus on interdisciplinarity in research and teaching is a direct response to the demands placed on future young professionals. Our University has co-operations with many universities and research centres throughout the world. Every year, a great number of international students and scientists visit RWTH Aachen University to study and research at a high standard recognised on an international level.

The following web pages will give you topical information and access to the structure and activities of RWTH Aachen University. They serve as a means of communication between the university and science and industry, as well as between the University and students or pupils interested in studying in Aachen. Furthermore, these pages provide direct access to members of the University.

RWTH Aachen University is the largest university of technology in Germany and one of the most renowned technical universities in Europe. It currently has around 28,000 enrolled students, most of them in the field of engineering. Every year, a large number of international students and scientists come to the University to benefit from its high-quality study programmes and excellent facilities, both of which are internationally recognised. Almost 5,000 international students are currently enrolled in undergraduate, graduate and PhD programmes.

The proximity of Aachen to the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg and its variety of cultural heritages has placed the University in a unique position for international collaboration with other educational and research institutions as well as with business and industry. Aachen’s unique location in the “Euregio” border region is apt to enhance and accelerate research activities and technology transfer between Germany, the neighbouring states of Belgium and the Netherlands and Europe at large.

RWTH Aachen University was founded as a polytechnical institute (Polytechnikum) in 1870 by an industrial initiative, in a then fringe area of the Prussian heavy industry. As early as 1899, it was granted the right to award doctoral degrees. Re-established after World War II as the Institute of Technology of North Rhine-Westphalia (Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen) it soon obtained the status of a university. Within a period of forty years, students numbers increased from around one thousand to 38,000 students in the 1990s.

The rapid advance in the sciences and in engineering and the concomitant growth of the departments resulted in the creation of further faculties in engineering and the natural sciences. As early as the 1960s, the university met the increasing societal demands by expanding its range of degree courses. The Faculties of Arts and Humanities and Medicine were founded in the 1960s, followed by the Faculty of Business and Economics in the 1980s.

Teaching and research are characterised by an international, innovative, and interdisciplinary approach and a close cooperation with business and industry. The main educational objective of RWTH Aachen Universitys is to provide solid knowledge of the basic scientific subjects, including the ability to apply this knowledge to engineering problems, and a high level of expertise in the various fields of specialisation, fostering the students’ capabilities to transfer research results into economic and technical applications.

In addition, the intensive interaction between the various fields of study in teaching and research is a direct response to the demands placed on future young professionals. Our engineering professors usually hold leading positions in industry before they become faculty members, and other experts from industry teach special courses which enable students to benefit from their expertise in bringing technological know-how to market. RWTH Aachen University has a long history of close and wide-ranging co-operation with national and international research centres and industries and thus contributes to the success and development of the German economy, increasingly extending this role within the European Union.
